The Old & New

These Australian pines were planted 
too close together and grew tall and spindly. 
Given space they normally grow to mighty trees 
and can be seen on the shorelines of many Pacific islands.
The last two years' typhoons have killed these weak trees off, 
but happily their brood of young ones survived 
in the undergrowth below and are now asserting themselves. 
By the time I am 120, and with proper spacing,
 they should grow into great trees .
